The secret gay history of Islam

In Muslim cultures, homosexuality was once considered the most normal thing in the world – so what changed?

The secret gay history of Islam
Find out the real LGBTI history behind Islam
13 October 2017    15:37 BST

Islam once considered homosexuality to be one of the most normal things in the world.

The Ottoman Empire, the seat of power in the Muslim world, didn’t view lesbian or gay sex as taboo for centuries. They formally ruled gay sex wasn’t a crime in 1858.

But as Christians came over from the west to colonize, they infected Islam with homophobia.

The truth is many Muslims alive today believe the prophet Muhammad supported and protected sexual and gender minorities.

But go back to the beginning, and you’ll see there is far more homosexuality in Islam than you might have ever thought before.

1 Ancient Muslim borrowed culture from the boy-loving Ancient Greeks

The Islamic empires, (Ottoman, Safavid/Qajar, Mughals), shared a common culture. And it shared a lot of similarities with the Ancient Greeks.

Persianate cultures, all of them Muslim, dominated modern day India and Arab world. And it was very common for older men to have sex with younger, beardless men. These younger men were called ‘amrad’.

Once these men had grown his beard (or ‘khatt’), he then became the pursuer of his own younger male desires.

And in this time, once you had fulfilled your reproductive responsibilities as a man you could do what you like with younger men, prostitutes and other women.

Society completely accepted this, at least in elite circles. Iranian historian Afsaneh Najmabadi writes how official Safavid chroniclers would describe the sexual lives of various Shahs, the ruling class, without judgment.

There was some judgment over ‘mukhannas’. These were men (some researchers consider them to be transgender or third gender people) who would shave their beards as adults to show they wished to continue being the object of desire for men. But even they had their place in society. They would often be used as servants for prophets.

‘It wasn’t exactly how we would define homosexuality as we would today, it was about patriarchy,’ Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed, a gay imam who lives in Marseilles, France, told GSN.

‘It was saying, “I’m a man, I’m a patriarch, I earn money so I can rape anyone including boys, other slaves and women.” We shouldn’t idealize antique culture.’

2 Paradise included male virgins, not just female ones

There is nowhere in the Qu’ran that states the ‘virgins’ in paradise are only female.

The ‘hur’, or ‘houris’, are female. They have a male counterpart, the ‘ghilman’, who are immortal young men who wait and serve people in paradise.

‘Immortal [male] youths shall surround them, waiting upon them,’ it is written in the Qu’ran. ‘When you see them, you would think they are scattered pearls.’

Zahed says you should look at Ancient Muslim culture with the same eyes as Ancient Greek culture.

‘These amrads are not having sex in a perfectly consenting way because of power relationships and pressures and so on.

‘However, it’s not as heteronormative as it might seem at first. There’s far more sexual diversity.’

3 Sodom and Gomorrah is not an excuse for homophobia in Islam

Like the Bible, the Qu’ran tells the story of how Allah punished the ancient inhabitants of the city of Sodom.

Two angels arrive at Sodom, and they meet Lot who insists they stay the night in his house. Then other men learn about the strangers, and insist on raping them.

While many may use this as an excuse to hate gay people, it’s not. It’s about Allah punishing rape, violence and refusing hospitality.

Historians often rely on literary representations for evidence of history. And many of the poems from ancient Muslim culture celebrate reciprocal love between two men. There are also factual reports saying it was illegal to force your way onto a young man.

The punishment for a rape of a young man was caning the feet of the perpetrator, or cutting off an ear, Najmabadi writes. Authorities are documented as carrying these punishments out in Qajar Iran.

4 Lesbian sex used as a ‘cure’

Fitting a patriarchal society, we know very little about the sex lives of women in ancient Muslim culture.

But ‘Sihaq’, translated literally as ‘rubbing’, is referenced as lesbian sex.

Sex between two women was decriminalized in the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, probably because it was deemed to have very little importance.

Physicians believed lesbianism developed from a hot itch on a woman’s vulva that could only be soothed by another woman’s sexual fluid. This derived from Greek medicine.

Much later, the 16th century Italian scientist Prosper Alpini claimed the hot climate caused ‘excessive sexual desire and overeating’ in women. This caused a humor imbalance that caused illnesses, like ‘lesbianism’. He recommended bathing to ‘remedy’ this. However, because men feared women were having sex with other women at private baths, many husbands tried to restrict women from going.

5 Lesbian ‘marriage’ and legendary couples

In Arabic folklore, al-Zarqa al-Yamama (‘the blue-eyed woman of Yamama’) fell in love with Christian princess Hind of the Lakhmids. When al-Zarqa, who had the ability to see events in the future, was crucified, it was said the princess cut her hair and mourned until she died.

Many books, especially in the 10th century, celebrated lesbian couples. Sapphic love features in the Book of Salma and Suvad; the Book of Sawab and Surur (of Justice and Happiness); the Book of al-Dahma’ and Nisma (of the Dark One and the Gift from God).

‘In palaces, there is evidence hundreds of women established some kind of contract. Two women would sign a contract swearing to protect and care for one another. Almost like a civil partnership or a marriage,’ Zahed said.

‘Outside of these palaces, this was also very common. There was a lot of Sapphic poetry showing same-sex love.’

As Europeans colonized these countries, depictions of lesbian love changed.

Samar Habib, who studied Arabo-Islamic texts, says the Arab epic One Thousand and One Nights proves this. He claims some stories in this classic show non-Muslim women preferred other women as sexual partners. But the ‘hero’ of the tale converts these women to Islam, and to heterosexuality.

6 Muhammad protected trans people

‘Muhammad housed and protected transgender or third gender people,’ Zahed said. ‘The leader of the Arab-Muslim world welcomed trans and queer people into his home.

‘If you look at the traditions some use to justify gay killings, you find much more evidence – clear evidence – that Muhammad was very inclusive.

‘He was protecting these people from those who wanted to beat them and kill them.’

7 How patriarchy transformed Islam

Europeans forced their way into the Muslim world, either through full on colonialism, like in India or Egypt, or economically and socially, like in the Ottoman Empire.

They pushed their cultural practices and attitudes on to Muslims: modern Islamic fundamentalism flourished.

While the Ottoman Empire resisted European culture at first, hence gay sex being allowed in 1858, nationalization soon won out. Twelve years later, in 1870, India’s Penal Code declared gay sex a crime. LGBTI Indians finally won against this colonial law in 2018.

But what is it like to be colonized? And why did homophobia get so much more extreme?

‘With the west coming in and colonizing, they think [Muslims] are lazy and passive and weak,’ Zahed said.

‘As Arab men, we have to prove we are more powerful and virile and manly. Modern German history is like that, showing how German nationalization rose after [defeat in] the First World War.

‘It’s tribalism, it’s the same problem. It’s about killing everyone against my tribe. I’m going to kill the weak. I’m going to kill anyone who doesn’t fulfil this aggressive nationalistic stereotype.’

Considering the male-dominant society already existed, it was easy for the ‘modern’ patriarchy to end up suppressing women and criminalizing LGBTI lives.

‘In the early 20th century, Arabs were ashamed of their ancient history,’ Zahed added. ‘They tried to purify it, censor it, to make it more masculine. There had to be nothing about femininity, homosexuality or anything. That’s how we got to how are today.’

8 What would Muhammad think about LGBTI rights?

Muhammad protected sexual and gender minorities, supporting those at the fringes of society.

And if Muslims are to follow in the steps of early Islamic culture and the prophet’s life, there is no reason Islam should oppose LGBTI people.

For Zahed, an imam, this is what he considers a true Muslim.

‘What should we do if we call ourselves Muslims now? Defend human rights, diversity and respect identity. If we trust the tradition, he was proactively defending sexual and gender minorities, and human rights.’

Whatever is written below and over here, muslims are the most sexually active with the same sex, in my experience: man with man. And they regard themselves as good muslim too. They have sex with other muslims and with Christians alike, and we treat each other equally. When I come to a Islamic country, the sex offer are literally hailing in on my date apps. Here are the first 25 references.

In the old testament the word fornication is more general. Then in the new testament, often when it is used, and as Jesus uses it, the version of the word fornication specifically includes homosexuality and lesbianism.

The Greek word used in these texts is "πορνεία". (pornia). Meaning:‐ illicit sexual intercourse adultery, fornication (sex between unmarried people), homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals; sexual intercourse with close relatives; sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman.

I can be as critical as anyone about Islam, but this article is nothing but Leftist anti-Christian propaganda, the kind approved of by Corbynites and the SWP. The fact is that homosexuality is not tolerated in Islam, primarily because it was condemned by Mohammed in Quran (4:16) and Quran (7:81). He is quoted in the hadiths: Abu Dawud (4462) demanding execution for those committing homosexual acts, whilst in Abu Dawud (4448) he prescribes the stoning to death of sodomites,

I provided references to support my argument, whereas the author of the deceitful article produced none.

It was written be three American converts to Islam who made their translation more acceptable to Western sensibilities by giving it all a Christian twist. Unsurprisingly, Google ensures that this taqiyya version appears at the top of Quranic verse searches.

The deceitfulness of the Sahih International translation is exposed by the hadiths, whereby Mohammed takes a particularly hostile and unforgiving stance on those who commit sodomy, ie. execution.

It is no longer a secret, but whether it gives a correct picture is simply the question, I see no source references. In the mystic Islam this is not a problem, but people who believe what the imam holds out to them and do not think for themselves will incite anger rather than brotherhood. Rejecting people is something that no world religion should promote. And no world religion does that either, but the leaders of the various movements are the instigators of divinity and hatred because of their limited vision. That is why it remains important to keep going back to the source and looking for the unity of all life and then you will see that there is no difference between you and me ...

I just want to make a point here: Although “Christians” did implemented homophobic laws to the colonies, they were not the sole reason why there is homophobia in Islam, there are a lot of arguments left out of this article and it can be mis-understood. And this statement: “But as Christians came over from the west to colonize, they infected Islam with homophobia.” is quite an oversimplified statement that I’m not sure how exactly is supposed to be inclusive of other religious believes. It gives the idea that Christians are the ones that infected Islam with homophobia, but in the end of the day, people have agency and authonomy, even under colonial rule people can decide not to be homophobes.

The author of the article knows not much about the Prophet Muhammad nor about true Islam. Homosexuality in general in all its forms has existed since ancient times, perhaps not as permissible today as it was, in almost all religions and non-religions, it is truly catastrophic to imagine that all the world is homosexual. And true Islam. In any case, the Internet can be found in all parts of the earth, and the earth has many variables and misgivings and misrepresentation and hatred, so what do you think of human beings are sick, and create and believe lies. This is just some propaganda way of the Left reconciling being pro-Islam and pro-LGBT at the same time as well as try to find yet one more way to stick it to European Christians to fit the narrative everything is their fault. Even if one can concede culturally at some point it was an accepted practice in those areas it still doesn't change Islam's stance on homosexuality now, today. Go tell that story to a bunch of Muslims and see what reaction you get. Further, go ask a bunch of Muslims what they think about homosexuality and most will say bad things about it. Only the most open and moderate would be fine with it and those would be hard to come by. Nice try though

Manno Sara I didn't say anything about "changing minds", what I said was "reconcile" both together. So what I mean is that modern day Islam is sooo anti-LGBT for the most part (and yes there are exceptions especially among western Muslims) that it leaves one asking how someone can be pro-Islam and pro-LGBT as the two are opposing and very much at odds with one trying to utterly destroy the other, just ask the gay men dying in Islamic countries. It makes no sense to support something that wants to completely get rid of the other thing if you support that too

Just one correction I can make to the article. The destruction of Sodom and Gommorah was about God's condemnation of homosexual sex.

Firstly.
God had told Abraham that he was going to destroy the cities before the angels were there. So inhospitality to the angels had nothing to do with God destroying the cities.

Second.
The text about Sodom's sin being inhospitablity is based on.....

Ezekiel 16:49. Look! This was the sin of your sister Sodom and her daughters: Pride, too much food, undisturbed peace, and failure to help the poor and needy. See More

also quran mention that the angels visited adam 1st and it even called them out "And (remember) Lut, when he said to his people; "Do you commit the worst sin such as none has preceding you has committed in the 'Alamin (among the mankind and the jinn)?"
81. "Verily, you practice your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds (by such sins)."
82"And the answer of his people was only that they said: 'Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!"
83. "Then (Allah) saved him and his family, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind (in the torment)."
84. "And (Allah) rained down on them a rain (of stones). Then see what was the end of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.)"

Islam forbidden same sex relationship

One scholar of Islam says;

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

Both of them – fornication and homosexuality – involve immorality that goes against the wisdom of Allaah’s creation and commandment. For homosexuality involves innumerable evil and harms, and the one to whom it is done would be better off being killed than having this done to him, because after that he will become so evil and so corrupt that there can be no hope of his being reformed, and all good is lost for him, and he will no longer feel any shame before Allaah or before His creation. The semen of the one who did that to him will act as a poison on his body and soul. The scholars differed as to whether the one to whom it is done will ever enter Paradise. There are two opinions which I heard Shaykh al-Islam (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrate.”

If homophobia was 'imported' by Christianity or Catholicism, as an atheist it can prove only one thing to me.

There is a major gulf between Islam as currently practiced by many & gay rights & other western cultural norms. We need discussion between the 2 groups. I suspect that any culture that supresses will always have things come out in the worst ways. Look at the Catholic Church forbidding Priests to be sexual & then how twisted they were with so many children. More tolerant Muslim friends have told me that many treat gay sex like adultery. People do it in private & as long as no one knows it is not a big deal. But thats not a safe way for people to live. And I imagine in violent countries like Iran, people must try to repress their sexual activity as much as they can.

I have never read so much rubbish in all my life. The writer of this fictitious story has put no references in to validate what they are saying. It seems the whole fairy tail is based off one Imam who is a shia Muslim that happens to be openly gay. Shia muslim is quite different to Sunni muslim hence the reason Shia and Sunni keep killing each other and have done so since the death of Mohammed in 632 ad.
If the writer had bothered to do any research on this they would know The founder of Islam, Mohammad hated gay and trans people from day one, it goes back to the days when the kaaba was used See More

Most people reference the wrong Ten Commandments - the ones that were detroyed by Moses in a fit of rage. When he went back to get a new set, it is this set that the bible refers to as 'The Ten Commandments' (previously they were just 'commandments'.) This new set has nothing about MURDER, or ADULTERY, or THEFT - it does however mention not to eat a baby goat if it was bathed in its others milk.

@Harisgh Ibrahim - There are over 70 conflicting sects within Islam, each of whom think THEIR interpretation is correct, and that all the others are wrong, e.g. Sunni, Shia and Khawarij. No-one is in charge of all Islam, and no-one on Earth speaks for ALL Muslims.

Same goes for Christianity, divided into over 40,000 conflicting denominations with opposite views to each other on remarriage after a no-fault divorce, women't ordination, birth control and same-sex marriage. Every one of these sects believe they have got the right interpretation and all the others are wrong. No-one is in charge of all Christianity, not even the Pope himself, and no-one on Earth speaks for ALL Christians.

You just used the propaganda tactic of the "straw man" argument. You claim what would happen in a situation that no one seriously believes could happen in the first place, and then claiming the results would end the human race and therefor your conclusion - "homosexuality is bad for the human species". (How illogical of you.) And your use of the words "if everyone thought the same way that you do" betrays your incorrect assumption the sexual orientation is a matter of choice. It isn't! What Does Islam Teach About...Homosexuality
What is Islam's position on the treatment of homosexuals?

Islam goes beyond merely disapproving of homosexuality. Sharia teaches that homosexuality is a vile form of fornication, punishable by death.

Beneath the surface, however, there are implied references to homosexual behavior in paradise, and it has been a historical part of Arab and Muslim culture.See More

The history of homosexual practice in the Moslem world is all very interesting, but it is bullshit to blame persecution of homosexuals in the Moslem world on Christians: "They pushed their cultural practices and attitudes on to Muslims: modern Islamic fundamentalism flourished." Christianity is NOT responsible for Islamic fundamentalism!

Why are you bending over backwards to protect Islam and Muhammad from criticism? The murder of homosexuals was commanded by Muhammad and anchored into standard Sharia law. "Muhammad said: “Kill the one who sodomizes and the one who lets it be done to him.”

Christianity condemns homosexuality, but it does not say to kill them. You know, hate the sin but love the sinner. Modern Christianity doesn't even condemn homosexuality anymore. Standard, mainstream Islamic doctrine commands that homosexuals be killed.

Muslim men do practice this, usually with young boys. In Israel, I used to see them holding hands. They do this if they are not married, supposedly, to curb their needs and to keep Muslim women from being raped. HOWEVER, it is a LIE to blame Christians and/or Europeans for their attitudes. The hatred of gays is in the quran, which says to throw them from high places. The same goes for Jews and all other infidels. Islam says to kill them. You can read it for yourself, if you dare. Don't believe me? Then, maybe try taking a trip to a sharia country and announcing you're gay, and see how that works out for 'ya.
Regressive "liberals" need to get that Muslims, as a whole, are probably not the best coalition partners for them or for the Jewish community, or for the LGBTQ or feminist communities, and that they are not compatible with Western cultures in general. He is describing a cultural belief rather than a islamic one.

Majority people mentioned in this article relate to to Iranians. This sort of culture may have been accepted in the Persian Empire which had a knock on effect to this day in Iran.

Few years back, I stumbled across some figures which is clearly evident that Iran has the second highest number of transgender operations after Thailand. Moreover, this idea about the ops was initiated by the first supreme leader of Iran. It seems to me like bending the religious rule given by God. Also, it seems to be like the one were Jewish ladies shaving of their heads and putting wigs on, for them this means that they won't have to cover their heads.

The Quran does not specify any punishment for homosexuality. The Hadith does. The Hadith is the collection of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammed. That collection was created 200 years after his death, meaning there is no way to verify those actual sayings. The story of Lut certainly exists in the Quran but it is up to interpretation whether any punishment (which came later) was due to consensual sex between male adults or for male rape. And it is a historical fact there was no legal sanction against same sex relations in pre-British India. That came with the British and so did many social attitudes. It is up to now for countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan to get rid of these ridiculous laws. But history cannot be ignored.

John Heflin Christian/Jewish doctrine says the exact same thing. There's nothing in the Koran that's not already in the Bible, which the Koran constantly quotes. But most members of all of these religions know better than to cling to antiquated scripture word-for-word. Countries with Chrstian majorities also executed gays until very recently. Homosexuality was illegal in Canada until 1969. But we grew out of that. And just like gay Jews and gay Christians fought for their rights in countries where they are prominent, gay Muslims are also fighting for their rights. The problem is not religion, the problem is religious fundamentalism and attempts to base laws on religion. Places like Saudi Arabia should serve as a lesson to Americans--that's what will happen if the Christian fundamantalists have their way.

When it's pointed out how some African countries have become ever more homophobic in recent years, the claim is wheeled on--as you wheel it on--"Oh, that just shows how horribly deep colonial oppression goes." Even if in three hundred years these countries are still oppressing gays, people like you will STILL be saying, "Oh, it just goes to show how very, very, very, very deep was the colonial influence in overcome the natural pro-gay culture inherent in the African mind."

I am not ASSERTING that the appalling oppression is due to inherently homophobic African culture.

Paul Brownsey but if you can trace the homophobic attitudes to that point in history, that's where it comes from. you can moan about how they should take more responsibility for their destinies and all that bollocks but if we as a global community can't own up to the harm we've done to most of the rest of the world then nothing is ever going to change, and you probably will still get homophobia in afirca in 300 years. Here's a link to an enlightening 1993 academic essay from Yale Law School about Same-Sex Marriage throughout history (Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, Mesopotamia, Clerics in early Church, and various Indigenous cultures before colonisation and missionaries invaded).
It also shows where and why homophobia started.
The coupling of homosexual couples, and marriage of such, used to be seen as a very valid contribution to a secure and and soundly-economic society, plus it was celebrated, and many prominant homosexual couples were noted to be some of the model citizens of their cultures.
It's a long essay, but I implore people to download the essay and read it...

On the other hand, it si perfectly natural for men who are attracted to men to have sex with men. It would be unnatural for them to try to pretend they are straight. And as far as I know, "normal" just means "what people usually do." So if everyone in town is wearing panda fur hats, then it is normal to wear panda fur hats. Edward Logan Brewster The God hypothesis fails because the concept is incoherent. Knowledge requires both proof and logical consistency. When historians explain something to you logically and show you the proof, you should believe them unless you have better proof. When scientists show you the proof of something, you should believe them unless you have better proof. If you just REFUSE to believe something regardless of the proof, then you are a denialist: someone who CHOOSES to ignore proof.

The report found that thirteen countries (or parts of them) impose the death penalty for “Same-sex sexual acts”. These countries comprise 6% of the countries in the United Nations. Of these thirteen countries, four are in Africa: Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, and Mauritania. Nine are in Asia: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, UAE, Iraq, and Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) territories. None are in the Americas, Europe, or Oceania.[119] The full report with details about countries imposing the death penalty can be read at State Sponsored Homophobia 2016.[120] This report omits that Brunei also punishes homosexuals with death [121] and that Brunei tolerates anti-gay vigilante attacks.

These sects differ only on which of the secondary hadiths they accept.

If you doubt the importance of the Hadiths, note that the 5 pillars of Islam are NOT defined in the Quran, but only in the Hadiths - number of prayers etc. So how can the Hadiths not be essential, if they define the pillars of Islam?

You simply cannot claim that the Quran is the only source that defines Islam. Besides, even if it was, that would not make Islam one bit better - even the Quran is totally evil.

The story of lot is in there and the faith ful are told that if two men are caught performing the sin of the people of Lut , then they must kill the one that is doing it And kill the ont that it is being done to. The punishment is even described in the holy writings... " Take them to the highest place and throw them off, then stone them until dead, "

Peter, the British empire went around codifying LGBT as a criminal offense in coutries such as Burma (Myanmar) that prior to the arrival of the British never had a problem with it as a Buddhist nation. Now it is still considered a crime and their attitude, and I lived there for four years, is far more British than the Thais, and the nation of Thailand who were never colonized and have no issue with it. China, only took on a western criminal mentality towards LGBT people after it was heavily occupied by European and the Americans. It has since decriminalzed it, but they once had male brothels and it was never a crime, until they took on Markism and western values.

Are you an ethno-religious historian Peter? The whole point is that what ends up getting codified as good and evil in the canonised or consecrated texts of different religions fails to capture the ethical multiplicity of the practices and attitudes of practitioners of that faith in different times and places.... faiths are better conceived as practiced, lived and diversely embodied, than as rule books

Fatima Benayoun It's in the Hadiths!

The core hadiths are an integral part of Islam and apply to all sects (Sunni, Shia etc.)

These sects differ only on which of the secondary hadiths they accept.

If you doubt it, note that the 5 pillars of Islam are NOT defined in the Quran, but only in the Hadiths - number of prayers etc. So how can the Hadiths not be essential, if they define the pillars of Islam?

Naél Leons shariah law is taken directly from the Islamic holy writings. The Hadith , sura, and Quran , it must be followed by Muslims as it is the law And the word of Allah as delivered to Mohamed by the angel Gabriel and in the words of the companions Remembering the sayings of the prophet. Muslims are told by the prophet that God wants them to do all in their power to convert the entire world to Islam, forming a one world caliphate living under sharian law. Only then will Allah be happy And only then can their version of end time prophecies unfold with the return of Islamic Jesus and their own messiah.

just because you don't like what an article says doesn't mean you can comment like you didn't even read it. the Quran doesn't say to kill gays, and it explains this misconception with the story of Lut, which is common to all Abrahamic religions.

It doesn't say " " Take them to the highest place and throw them off, then stone them until dead, "" anywhere in the Quran. I'm unsure it even says it in the hadith, and you can find a hadith for almost anything if you don't care about how reliable they are.

In response to you saying that Christians of Mohammed's day were "killed and driven out of the birthplace of Christianity" you can brush up on your history and realize that you have the French Catholics to thank for that.

Prior to the aggressions that ignited the Crusades, Jerusalem was a peaceful home for all faiths.

And in many places in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Jews, Christians and Muslims live side by side, working together, sharing meals, and respecting each other's faiths.

Could you enlighten us where in the hadith it tells us about prayers (2nd pillar)? For instance which hadith tells us that Duhr is 4 raqa'a? All the other pillars are well defined in the holy Qur'an, but prayers are neither defined in the holy book nor in the hadith. The latter is not even considered a holy scripture by any of the Muslim sects. The Muslim scholars describe the science of hadith as 'zunney Althoboot' means it may or may not be an authentic quote by the prophet. The holy Qur'an on the other hand is considered 'Qatt'ey Althoboot ' means it's an authentic script that was revealed to the prophet and there's no doubt about its authenticity
